roof Raven
White Mountains, NH
On calm winter days with little wind, a temperature inversion can happen —which draws the clouds to dramatically low elevations.
on days like this, the valley cannot see what is happening at the summit.
But above the clouds, lies a single raven.
Calling the corner of the highest rooftop his home base.
..occasionally going on soaring missions
Only to return..
Time and again.
“Good roof.”
“and a beautiful day.”
In the eastern U.S., Ravens are found almost exclusively in dense natural areas of the Appalachian mountains and the north Maine Woods —making Raven sightings an exciting event, and subtle symbol of wild nature.
Like many large birds, Ravens mate for life and will most often be seen in pairs. This solo individual eventually found a round object (or potentially an especially spherical ice ball) - carrying it from perch to perch, before eventually flying down into the clouds with its ball in beak (pictured here). This is a collecting behavior most often seen in young male ravens attempting to court a new female by demonstrating resourcefulness. If that is the case here, we hope she liked it.
